During that amazing set of covers that Susanna Hoffs did with Matthew Sweet at the Drink in Austin last Saturday night, I (like everyone else in the room) was in a zone and grinning like a fiend. There were five other musicians onstage, but my eyes were pretty much locked on to Ms. Hoffs for most of the set. Now there’s no reason at all that she would have cause to frequently look my way and briefly intensify her already beaming smile, but I just grinned back, as if (as if) she was somehow shooting me a look…a guy can dream, can’t he? Toward the end of the set, my little fantasy was, of course, dispelled when she dedicated that Left Banke song to Mr. Carosello who was standing right in front of me. D’oh!

We were all thinking the same as you, Rick! Susanna has that uncanny ability to make you think she's singing to and looking at ONLY YOU. Stay tuned, recap & photos to come, hopefully by tomorrow, of both Sid 'n' Susie shows I saw at SXSW.

Hey did you get into Superchunk/Pollard? When I tried to call you in line as I was heading over to Antone's, I didn't have your phone number stored in my cell phone---DOH! I just got a new phone the weekend before we split, so I guess I spaced putting you in when I was storing numbers. I was pretty worn out doing that by the time I got to the "W's" in my phone book! :) As I walked around Antone's to see just how long the line was, I could hear Superchunk kicking out their wonderful jams. No way I was getting in, so I bought a really good hot dog from a street vendor for the long walk back to Habana Calle, where Steve & Dominic were waiting for me...
